The tab I posted "Ray - If I Had" I made myself, and is what I created myself. I did not post it from someone who had it as a piano thing in a song, I made it myself, so why is it Copyrighted?

Sorry about that. But are you sure the NMPA doesn't own the copyright to your song? :/

It has been fixed, thanks for letting us know.

Actually, all of the songs on this website, other than the featured ones, have been taken down. Every last song that I clicked, be it original or otherwise, was taken down for copyright. That can't be right, can it? :/

Bit curious about this copyright thing. I'm fairly sure ALL of my tabs have been de-listed. Some of my tabs that have been de-listed I know couldn't possibly be subject to a copyright claim.

For example my 'With Broken Wings' tab:

http://www.tabnabber.com/view_Tab.asp?song=Wit...

I know for a fact that the band never signed to a label, broke up a few years ago and the song in question was never officially released, it was only as a demo.

Not sure exactly how this copyright thing works with tablature, but guitar tab sites don't seem to get the same problem; and they work in the same way.

Surely you only have to take down the tabs which they specifically sent you a take down notice for? And anyway I would have thought this would all fall under fair use which "allows use of copyrighted materials for educational purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research." Fairly sure that the piano tabs on this site are provided for teaching purposes.

And anyway TECHNICALLY Tabnabber doesn't host copyrighted material. Apart from the sheet music and lyrics most of the work on this site is just the user's own interpretation of the music.

I feel your pain BA, I've faced the same kind of crap with my Youtube uploads getting taken down. :/

@Tabber Dude - I removed the unauthorized status from your "With Broken Wings" tab. That should make StrawberryGashes happy.

We admittedly overreacted to the copyright claims from the NMPA's lawyers, but we wanted to do everything possible to minimize the chances of them pursuing their goal of shutting us down completely. (And they have done this with many lyric and tablature sites before us, such as http://OLGA.net).

There are undoubtedly many more tabs that are incorrectly flagged as being unauthorized and we are working on restoring them. Please continue to notify us when you see an authorized/original song and we'll reinstate the tab immediately.

These short term actions were needed to keep us around for the long haul and until we can reach an agreement with the NMPA that allows everyone to share their own interpretations of music with each other without getting lawyers involved.

Your points about "fair use" and "user's interpretations" sound legitimate, but we don't have the resources to fight a billion dollar organization in court (I don't believe any tablature site has done so...yet).

"...yet"

Is this a sign Tabbernabber is going to move its servers to Sweden and laugh in the face of greedy fat lawyers Pirate Bay style? ;D

Jokes aside, I'd rather a few tabs temporarily de-listed than Tabnabber be taken down and everything permanently lost.

the truth is, this wouldn't hold up in court and they know it, so they just send idle threats. why? because by the time tabnabber switches to their new site, their fanbase will be gone and the website is pretty much killed. you can argue with me, but it is probably going to happen because i've seen it before.

after all, why wait here when i can go to the dozens of other tab sites out there?

Hello All,

It's been a while since I've been on tabnabber however I was shocked to see that all of my tabletures are blocked from public view. Can this be removed? Also, why would intelectual property of individuals be considered property of a corperation. It's not like these lawyers' clients created these tabs. I believe there is no copyright law which prohibits the sharing of an original product open to opinions and education. A reponce would be gladly appreciated. Thank you

Also, if a letter was sent to this site's owner with threats regarding copyrights and no copyright law was even broken, there is no need to even consider removing the site or its content. I understand the precautions being taken and do not want to see this website fall into corperate greed. I mean, look at what the PirateBay has done with all of their letters claiming they break copyright laws and send threats.

The problem is the MPA considers *anything* related to a copyrighted song to be their own property. This includes lyrics, chords, tabs, notes, probably even the bands' names themselves, its all proprietary top secret information that only the MPA can disseminate.

This seems like a violation of freedom of speech.

You have to put yourselves in the shoes of an author not wanting someone to post their entire work online for free, it could theoretically cut into the sales of their original work. But it is perfectly legal to paraphrase or sample a portion of their work.

Tabs that are copied perfectly and verbatim from the original sheet music and posted online for free should not be allowed.

But that is the exception especially in this site. Almost all the tabs I've ever seen are incomplete and imperfect works that promote the artists by increasing their fanbase and which would only help to boost their sales.

That doesn't make any sense... In a court case of Gibson vs Paul Reed Smith where PRS was making single cut guitars a higher court ruled that only an idiot would walk out of a store buying a PRS instead of a gibson les paul. When it comes to trademark / copyrighted assets its the deception of a product or service to make a customer purchase copied material.

No-body on their right mind would buy a youtube version of someone playing Hey Jude with your tab on their piano recorded with their crappy web cam over the beatles version.
