How about adding a simple MIDI to piano tab function that would covert a single voice 4/4 MIDI file into a piano tab?

You read my mind. I actually started to create a midi to piano tab converter a few months back, but got distracted on some other tasks and forgot all about it. This would be a great tool though.
Look for this in the near future, thanks for the suggestion!

I know it is a nontrivial programming job, but it would be a HUGE time saver. I will look forward to it.

First I have to say I am pretty impressed. It did Linus & Lucy pretty well, but then I tried the piano part from twisting by the pool and it was buggy.
Good first shot though!

Yeah, I've noticed that some files you have to set the note spacing just right or the tracks seem to get out of sequence for a bit...I've had some good luck with setting the note spacing to 50% and 150%.
If you want to send us that midi file at tabnabber@gmail.com we will take a look at it and (possibly) fix it!

Hey BA
Finally got a chance to do my second evaluation.
First the number on the left is useless and in my opinion should be eliminated. It is relevant only to the MIDI file it was lifted from.
Second there is no sense of meter in the tab. Including measure lines would be a BIG help.
Thirdly, if you could include the actual bpm of the piece in text at the top, it would be appreciated. (Anvil does it so I am sure its in the MIDI file somewhere.)
Finally there is the note timing issue. When a tab is played back each symbol has an implicit timing associated with it. Can it be made explicit? Can you include the > symbol to indicate the sustain of the each note?
Thanks - Todd

I agree with teeowe for the most part except I like the number on the left, bc with it i can identify left hand and right hand in some midi files.

I was testing the midi to piano converter and it doesn't seem to recognize when different tracks start in relation to the other measures, it just assumes that they all start at the beginning. This would work with most of the basic midi's but wanting to compress a song that has multiple instruments playing the melody at different times throws a wrench into the system.
Is there anyway that the converter can keep track of the timing? I'm not sure how that'd work because I don't know how midi's are coded to begin with.

Version 1.2 of the midi to piano tab converter is released. This release improves tab quality and allows you to hide/show track numbers (@teeowe and @slickrick).
We will revisit the other suggestions later - including measure lines, auto-detected and displaying the midi's bpm (the midi's speed is shown next to the note spacing drop down) and displaying sustain symbols with the tab.
@N0Life I haven't noticed the issue you mention in any of the midi files I've converted, can you send us the midi file to us at tabnabber@gmail.com ?
Thanks, BA

Instead of
3|-b---------| 3|-a----------|

@marosi - we hoped nobody would notice! i think whatever note comes first in the midi gets listed the highest, but this is something that we would like to see fixed as well. we'll look into this. thanks!

@BA Hey This is just an idea and I understand how hard it is to code programs but to fix the midi problem I mentioned earlier Why not just make a program right after the conversion to a tab make another step that puts all the notes in the right places like it makes it so a c cant be above a b or a c in an octave

Oh and also it seems to help to download the tabs midi and put it back through the converter
