confused...when I see chords like G\b
I thought it meant it is a G chord 1st inversion (B + D + E)
But I've run across some that don't make sense:
Dm/C for example. What else can it mean? It's driving me nuts! Thanks!

The answer to your question according to your example is:
G/b means that the first or top letter "G" is your right hand chord and the bottom letter "b" is your left hand note. Both are to be played at the same time.
I have been taking piano lessons for a while and one of the songs that I have been taught has alot of those. It gets confusing at first, but once you get the hang of it, it sounds pretty cool.

By left hand, that is taking into account you're playing the chords with your right hand?

Does it mean that regardless of what hand is playing most of the chords, lefthand/righthand ?
for the G/b example?

'X/Y' Chord Notation: X = Chord (for piano this is typically the right hand); Y = Bass Note(s) (for piano, typically the left hand).
Typical Examples:

   G      G/B       F      F/A       Dm     Dm/C

R5|g-------g-------|f-------f-------|-----------
R5|d-------d-------|c-------c-------|d-------d--
R4|b-------b-------|a-------a-------|a-------a--
R4|g-------g-------|f-------f-------|f-------f--
R4|----------------|----------------|d-------d--
L3|g-------b-------|f-------a-------|d-------c--
L2|g-------b-------|f-------a-------|d-------c--
