The effect was repeated with different rituals done by the participants prior to consumption of cake, chocolate, and even carrots. In all cases, enjoyment seemed to be enhanced in part due to the build up of anticipation - in fact, the longer someone waited to eat something, the more they enjoyed the taste. But lest you think you can maximize your flavor potential simply by listening to your loved ones belt out a song, the researchers noted that "personal involvement is key". So next time someone starts serenading you with birthday wishes, do your tastebuds a favor and join in.
