Buzzkill: Alcoholic Lyrics On the Rise

Researchers in the UK have studied the alcoholic content of our songs, and found that in the US and UK, references to alcohol in our top tunes are on the rise. Songs of the 1980's and 90's had far fewer references, but by the 2000's the percent had increased to 8% of popular tunes. By 2011, nearly 20% of top 10 songs contained some alcoholic content.
This pattern is consistent with US trends, although UK charts still have fewer alcohol mentions than their US counterparts.

Alcohol-related song lyrics are associated with urban song genres and US artists, with lyrics generally putting a positive spin on alcohol consumption. Drinking is linked to confidence, gregariousness or physical attractiveness, as well as outcomes such as wealth, success, or sex. Chart-topping singers voice the negative effects of alcohol on health and wellbeing far less frequently.
