EyeMusic: Seeing With Your EarsDeveloped by researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, EyeMusic is a Sensory Substitution Device (SSD) that employs musical tones to help the blind see via music. The device scans images and converts them into musical notes that span five octaves, representing higher vertical locations as higher-pitched notes and lower vertical locations as lower-pitched notes. The horizontal locations are reflected by the timing of the musical notes, and the brightness is reflected by the loudness of the sound. Their algorithm also represents different colors with different instruments: white (vocals), blue (trumpet), red (reggae organ), green (synthesized reed), yellow (violin), and black (silence).
